training schedule

My husband was a runner in high school. He never really set out to be a runner, it just sort of happened. His freshman year he got cut from the soccer team and wanted to do a sport. Any sport really, just something. So he saw that the track team was practicing and headed over. He figured he'd be a jumper, but when he headed over to the jumping area, the coach told him to go do the time trials, just because that's what they were doing and where they had room for him that day.

So, in his basketball shoes, Bryce headed out to do the 1600m time trial. 4:58...that was his time, as a freshman, in basketball shoes, no prior experience. Needless to say, with practice he got even faster. I would say he was a natural, but he would disagree. He says he just worked really hard.

He had a very successful running career in high school, but chose to stop because of foot issues and he hasn't really run since. He has other sports of choice that keep him active about once a week. Otherwise, he's not much into working out or conditioning for anything.

So all of that to say that we went and cheered some friends on at a local marathon yesterday. It was so inspiring to see them kicking some serious booty and I loved watching all of the other runners, too. Such a neat event.

Last night, my hubby and I were talking about running and I asked him if he'd ever consider running a half or full marathon with me. He said it could be fun, but maybe not a full, because of the training time...the half would be much more doable. When I commented on it, he said that training for a half would be much easier...because he really wouldn't have to train.

"What do you mean you wouldn't have to train?"

I'm training to run a half in September with my friend, Angie. We started training in April, thinking that if we give ourselves enough time to amp up our speed and mileage, we can ROCK this half. Five months felt like a safe amount of time.

So me, taking five months to train for my first half, hears my husband say this...

"If I just start running two weeks before the race, I'll be fine."

That strength and confidence must be nice...

Tripp is just like Bryce! We planned to run a half together back in February. I had a regimented training schedule and he ran a few miles on the treadmill at the fire station every so often. Knowing he is way faster than me, he said he would stay with me and I could set the pace. When it came time for the race, I had caught a nasty cold/flu. I knew it would not be smart for me to run the half. So he ran it without me, at around a 8:30 pace. Whatever.
