Our long time family friends, the Hagens, came to visit us in Palm Desert, CA. Our families have been friends since Rachel and I were babies and our dads taught and coached together. We moved to southern California when I was 5 and Rachel's family moved up north to Washington. Despite the distance, our families tried to get together at least once every year. Those times are some of my absolute favorite memories growing up. We always had a blast together, and it was especially nice that Rachel and I were within 4 months of age, Rebekah and Erin were just a year apart, and Sarah and Nicole, I think, were a year and a half apart. Michael was the lone baby boy, but he got lots of attention, for sure!
This particular picture is of our trip to The Living Desert near our house. It's sort of like the Northwest Trek in Washington, just with snakes, cacti, quail, coyotes, and other desert things. Here are the 6 girls, climbing a tree (I don't remember what kind...). Now, if you could really see this close up, you would notice that 5 of us are wearing matching t-shirts that my mom decorated...with puffy paint. On each shirt was a picture of a dinosaur, and above the dino, our names were printed with "saurus" at the end. So, "Audrey-saurus" was on my shirt, "Rachel-saurus" on Rachel's, and so on. To the best of my memory, we loved those shirts and proudly wore them until the puffy paint started peeling off.
On to the next interesting part of this picture - Rachel and I are holding hands. Did you notice? We thought it would be cool to hold hands to represent our friendship. We were in third grade at the time, and, well, that was a cool thing to do, in our minds. It was also cool to have matching hairstyles. After all, isn't that what best friends do?

I feel very fortunate to say that you will be seeing much more of the Hagens in my "Remembering 'When'sday" posts. They have been a great part of my life, and I'm so thankful for them. And Rachel, since I know you'll probably be reading this at some point, I promise to be posting some more flattering pictures of the both of us in the future! I had to start somewhere, though. Right? :)

Excuse me...you were a dork all on your own...you didn't need our help!
Ouch!
lol! I was hot! I am almost crying with the memories! We had so much fun and were so corny! We will definitely have to create a new generation of "dino shirts" for our kids in a couple of years when there are at least 6 or so...
:)
Thanks for the laugh and memory!
I LOVE IT! You guys were adorable :)
